Arthur Bordier
Arthur Bordier (3 May 1841 – 17 February 1910) was a French anthropologist, physician, medical geographer and founder of the Dauphiné Society of Ethnology and Anthropology.
Biography
Arthur Bordier was born in Saint-Calais. He studied in Paris and received his doctorate in medicine in June 1868 and became head of clinic at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris. He was a military doctor during the 1870 war.
In 1878, Bordier was appointed to the new chair of medical geography at the Paris School of Anthropology (founded by Paul Broca), a chair he held until 1895.
Bordier was director of the Preparatory School of Medicine and Pharmacy in Grenoble from 1894 until his death. In this capacity, he recruited Hippolyte Müller as librarian. At the same time, in 1902, he became director of the municipal hygiene service and founded the Dauphiné Society of Ethnology and Anthropology (Grenoble, 1894), of which he was secretary general until his death, also organizing the very first congress of the French Association for the Advancement of Science (1885).
He was made a knight of the Legion of Honor on February 4, 1880.
He died in Grenoble and was buried in the Saint Roch Cemetery.
