Alphonse J. Delattre

Alphonse-J. Delattre SJ (6 March 1841 – 20 March 1928) was a Belgian Roman Catholic priest, assyriologist and professor of Hebrew and Sacred Scripture. He was an oponent of the progressive exegetes of his time, Marie-Joseph Lagrange in particular.

Biography

Alphonse Delattre was born in Templeuve, Belgium. He joined the Society of Jesus and was ordained priest on September 8, 1876; Delattre studied in Beyrouth from 1886 until 1888. A distinguished assyriologist, Delattre was professor of Hebrew and Sacred Scripture at the Louvain scolasticate (1888–1901) and professor of exegesis at the Pontifical Gregorian University (1904–1907), as successor of Enrico Gismondi (1850–1912), considered too liberal.

Alphonse J. Delattre died in Tronchiennes.
