She is the author of two bestselling memoirs and the creator and performer of two award-winning one-woman plays. Her most recent work, Confessions of a Fairy's Daughter, is both a memoir (Alfred A. Knopf: May 2013) and a solo performance piece that has won several awards. Drawing on her own life experience, Confessions of a Fairy's Daughter tells the story of growing up with a gay father in a small town (Peterborough, Ontario) in the 1980s.[1][2] An article in The Globe and Mail documents the process that led to Confessions: "It was while performing material about growing up with a gay father that she realized a book about it could have universal appeal. “It felt to me that the story was partly about how family forces us to become better people by asking us to love people, understand and accept people that we might not otherwise if we weren’t in this family dynamic thing together; bonded from birth.” (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/relationships/what-its-like-to-grow-up-with-a-gay-father/article11966205/)

Wearing's first solo performance piece, Giving Into Light, was created in central Mexico, where she lived for almost a decade, and the play combines literary chronicles with music, dance and theatre. In addition to numerous other awards, Giving Into Light was a finalist for the Best Fringe Production of 2011 by CBC/CVV Magazine/Times Colonist/Monday Magazine.

Wearing's first book was the internationally acclaimed travel memoir, Honeymoon in Purdah, her account of a trip to Iran.[2] The Calgary Sun called it "the perfect travel memoir" and the Ottawa Citizen hailed it as "one of the best pieces of travel writing it has been my privilege to read in this, or any, millennium."

Wearing performs in literary and theatrical events and festivals throughout North America. She lives in Stratford, Ontario, with her partner and son.

Awards

Wearing's writing has been awarded a National Magazine Award Gold Medal, a Western Canada Magazine Award 1st Prize, has been nominated for the Journey Prize, long-listed for the RBC Taylor Prize for Non-Fiction, and has appeared in numerous publications and anthologies. Theatre awards include: CBC award for Outstanding Solo Show, Best Dramatic Script (United Solo Festival, NYC), four Best of Fest Awards (Canadian Fringe Festivals), Best Drama (Victoria Fringe Festival), Patrons' Pick (Winnipeg Fringe Festival), Top 5 of the Fringe (The Spectator), and Critics' Choice Spotlight Award finalist for Best Fringe Production of 2011 (CBC/CVV Magazine/Times Colonist/Monday Magazine).
