Alexandru Mihăiță Chipciu (born 18 May 1989 in Brăila[1]) is a Romanian footballer who plays as a forward for Romanian side Steaua București and the Romania national team.

He moved to Steaua București in the winter of 2011, after five seasons with FC Brașov. Chipciu helped Steaua to UEFA Europa League success and to their first title in more than half a decade within two years of joining them.[2]

Youth career

Chipciu started his football career in 2001 at the youth squad of CF Brăila and Sporting Pitești, from 2004 to 2006. After that he moved to FC Brașov.[3]

Club career

FC Brașov

At the age of just 18 he made the breakthrough in the first squad, scoring 4 goals in his first year with FC Brașov. But, after the teams pretentions grew, wanting the promotion to the Liga I, he got less play time.

Loan to Forex Brașov and Brăila

For the first half of the 2008–09 season he was loaned out to Liga II side Forex Brașov.[4] In the second half of the season he went to Liga III side CF Brăila to gain experience.[5]

Back at now, Liga I side, FC Brașov, Chipciu again got little playing time in the first season. In the 2010–11 season he exploded,[6] being one of the best players of FC Brașov and attracting the attention of Romanian giants Steaua București and Dinamo București.[7] He eventually choose to remain at FC Brașov, signing a new contract that will keep him at the team until 2015.[8] He had a great start to the 2011–12 season, scoring two very important goals in the first three games.

Steaua București

On 21 December 2011, Steaua București signed him for a transfer fee of 1,2m. The player penned a five-year contract with the club.[9] The transfer became official on 25 January, when the transfer window was declared opened.[10]

On 31 March, Chicpiu scored his first goal for Steaua to bing home a 1–1 draw from Pandurii Târgu Jiu.[11] A week later, on 8 April, Chipciu scored another goal in a 4–1 win against Sportul București, after an impressive build-up play.[12] On 7 May, he was red-carded in the match against Concordia Chiajna, after a foul against the Brazilian full back Guilherme.[13]

In the autumn of 2012 Chipciu helped Steaua Bucharest qualify from the UEFA Europa League group stage, after defeating teams like VfB Stuttgart, Molde FK and FC Copenhagen.[14] Subsequently Steaua defeated AFC Ajax on penalty shoot-outs, before losing in the last 16 against Chelsea FC with 3–2 on aggregate.[15]

On May 10, 2013, in the one of the last matches of the 2012–13 season, Alexandru Chipciu suffered an injury playing against Dinamo Bucharest and he was subsequently sidelined for 5 months after a fractured tibia.[16] Two weeks later Chipciu received a winners medal for the 2012–13 Liga I, after Steaua defeated FC Brașov in the last match of the season. This was his first championship title.
