Attack
At around 3:05 p.m. EDT on October 31, 2017, a man named Sayfullo Saipov (29), a native of Uzbekistan, driving a rented flatbed pickup truck from New Jersey painted as a Home Depot truck swerved into the segregated bike lane of West Street in Lower Manhattan.[3] Entering the bike lane from Houston Street, the driver ran over multiple pedestrians in the Hudson River Park bikeway, mainly bike riders, causing at least eight fatalities and fifteen injuries.[1][4][5] The driver came to a stop at Chambers Street after colliding with a school bus. He reportedly left the truck with fake guns. Law enforcement officers said that he shouted "Allahu Akbar" as he stepped out of the vehicle.[1] The suspect was shot by New York City Police Department officers and taken into custody and medical care.[6][7][8]
People in the attack
Victims
8 people were killed and more than 12 were injured in this incident, which New York Mayor Bill de Blasio described as a "particularly cowardly act of terror".[9][10] Two of the victims were identified as foreign nationals, with one being Belgian and one being Argentine.[11]
Suspected perpetrator
The police named the suspect as 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov, a citizen of Uzbekistan, a permanent resident of the United States, and a resident of Tampa, Florida and Paterson, New Jersey.[12][13]. Investigators found notes inside the vehicle indicating loyalty to ISIS. [14]
Aftermath
Stuyvesant High School was placed on lockdown after reports of shots were heard nearby. Several nearby streets were also closed.[1]
