Season summary

The club was a perennial struggler and had repeatedly had to apply for re-election to the Football League, having finished in the bottom two of the Fourth Division five times in the past six seasons. After sacking Geoff Twentyman, the Board appointed the 30-year-old Brian Clough[1] in October 1965 to his first managerial role.[2] He accepted the job and immediately asked former Middlesbrough goalkeeper Peter Taylor (then managing non-League Burton Albion) to join him as his assistant. Also, Clough offered the trainer spot to Jimmy Gordon a former Middlesbrough assistant during his player stage in that team, however, Gordon rejected the offer and continued to work with Blackburn Rovers as its club trainer. [3] Teenage midfielder John McGovern joined the club after Taylor scouted him at Central Park.[4]

League table

The Football League
Season 1965–66
Champions Liverpool

The 19651966 season was the 67th completed season of The Football League.

This season is notable for Liverpool winning the title with only 14 squad players.

Final league tables

The tables and results below are reproduced here in the exact form that they can be found at The Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation website[5] and in Rothmans Book of Football League Records 1888–89 to 1978–79,[6] with home and away statistics separated.

Beginning with the season 1894–95, clubs finishing level on points were separated according to goal average (goals scored divided by goals conceded), or more properly put, goal ratio. In case one or more teams had the same goal difference, this system favoured those teams who had scored fewer goals. The goal average system was eventually scrapped beginning with the 1976–77 season.

Since the goal average was used for this purpose for such a long time, it is presented in the tables below even for the seasons prior to 1894–95, and since the goal difference is a more informative piece of information for a modern reader than the goal average, the goal difference is added in this presentation after the goal average.

Since the Fourth Division was established in the 1958–59 season, the re-election process has concerned the bottom four clubs in that division.[6]
