During the 1945–46 English football season, Brentford competed in an extended FA Cup programme, due to the continuation of the suspension on Football League play due to the aftermath of the Second World War. The Bees advanced to the sixth round, equalling the club record.

Season summary

Though the Second World War had ended in Europe on 8 May 1945, a competitive Football League season would not be held until 1946–47. Instead, an enlarged FA Cup competition was staged, with two-legged ties taking place from the first round proper onwards.[1] As members of the First Division, Brentford entered the competition in the third round.[1] Manager Harry Curtis had plenty of his pre-war First Division starting lineup to choose from, with goalkeeper Joe Crozier, full backs Bill Gorman and George Poyser, half back Buster Brown and forwards Idris Hopkins, Gerry McAloon, Billy Scott and Len Townsend all available, though by the time of Brentford's opening match on 5 January 1946, Gorman, Poyser, Brown, Hopkins and Scott were all age 34 or over. Brentford advanced to the sixth round of the Cup (equalling the club record),[2] seeing off Tottenham Hotspur, Bristol City and local rivals Queens Park Rangers before suffering a 4–9 aggregate defeat to Charlton Athletic.[3] Gerry McAloon top-scored with six goals.[4]
