Season 1909–10 was the 33rd Scottish football season in which Dumbarton competed at national level, entering the Scottish Football League for the 11th time, the Scottish Cup for the 28th time and the Scottish Qualifying Cup for the eighth time.

Overview

For the second successive season, Dumbarton finished 4th in the Second Division with 23 points, 10 behind champions Leith Athletic.[1] However once again Dumbarton failed to gain promotion in the subsequent 'election' process.

For the first time in five years the club was successful in qualifying for the Scottish Cup, by reaching the semi final of the Scottish Qualifying Cup before losing to Bathgate. The first round draw in the Scottish Cup was however unkind to Dumbarton, but they put up a stiff resistance in losing only by the odd goal to Celtic.

Locally, the Dumbartonshire Cup continued to be played on a league basis. Dumbarton qualified for the final but as in the five previous seasons lost out, this time to Dumbarton Harp.

During the season there were also 3 'friendly' matches played, winning 1 and losing 2, scoring 5 goals and conceding 5.

Note that the first goal against Cowdenbeath on 25 December (scored by Johnny Hill) was Dumbarton's 1,000th in all national competitions.
