The 1988 Women's Olympic Volleyball Tournament was the seventh edition of the event, organised by the world's governing body, the FIVB in conjunction with the International Olympic Committee. The competition in Seoul, South Korea was held from September 20 to September 29, 1988.

* Cuba qualified as the Runner-Up of the 1986 World Championship since the winner was China and China was already qualified as olympic defending champion. Cuba withdrew due to the North Korea-led boycott and was replaced by 23x15px Brazil.

** Japan qualified as the Runner-Up of the 1987 Asian Championsnip since the winner was China and China was already qualified as olympic defending champion.

***An African team was invited to participate in this edition, since no African team showed interest, a World Qualifier was held in Italy,  Soviet Union won the tournament securing the final berth.[1]
