Toyota New Zealand is the importer and distributor of new Toyota, Lexus and formerly Daihatsu vehicles in New Zealand. It also imports used vehicles from Japan and refurbishes them at its plant in Thames. Until 1998 it also assembled a variety of vehicles.

Local Manufacturing

Toyota assembled a variety of vehicles in New Zealand from the 1960s through to late 1998. Complete knock down (CKD) kits were brought in from Japan and assembled in plants located in Thames and Christchurch. Locally produced components were also used, and included items such as tyres, seats, trims, and glass. Vehicles that were locally assembled were Corolla, Corona, Crown, Hilux, LiteAce,and HiAce.

However, during 1998 the New Zealand Government decided that tariffs on imported cars would be abolished. This led to the remaining four local assemblers (Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi) to announce that they would end local assembly and switch to importing fully built-up vehicles. Cars manufactured in Australia, including Toyota Australia's Camry, were already being imported into New Zealand duty-free under the Closer Economic Relations (CER) agreement.

Toyota New Zealand decided that it would turn its sole remaining plant at Thames into a refurbishment centre for the resale of used imports from Japan, designated as Signature Class. [1]

In 2014 celebrated 27 years of vehicle market leadership in New Zealand.

Toyota New Zealand’s key operations are based from three locations: the National Customer Centre in Palmerston North, Thames Vehicle Operations in Thames and a Port of Entry facility and Corporate Sales Office in Auckland. Toyota NZ sells new Toyota and Lexus vehicles as well as used vehicles, parts and service.

New Vehicles

New Toyota and Lexus vehicles are sourced from Japan, Australia, England and the United States of America. Vehicles are shipped from overseas manufacturing plants to New Zealand and distributed by local freight transportation companies.

Used Vehicles

Toyota New Zealand imports used Toyotas purchased in Japan and certifies them to specific standards at the Thames Vehicle Operations facility. Ex-lease Toyotas originally sold new in New Zealand are refurbished and sold under Toyota NZ's "Signature Class" brand.[1]

Former marques

Toyota New Zealand announced on 8 April 2013 that sales of new Daihatsu vehicles in the country would end by the end of the year, citing a lack of products that would comply with future NZ regulatory standards.

Toyota New Zealand acquired Campbell Motor Industries in 1975 which assembled the American Motors Rambler models until its acquisition.
