Star Arcade is a mobile social video game company established in 2010 in Jyväskylä, Finland, by serial entrepreneurs Harri Myllylä and Jonne Castrén. The company offers wide range of mobile games for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Symbian, S40, Meego, Maemo, BB10, Bada, as well as Facebook.[4] All the games are so called freemium titles, which means they are available to download for free, but users have the choice of making various in-game purchases to gain premium features, level upgrades and virtual goods.[5]

The company aims to engage “the next billion gamers” from developing markets such as Latin America, Africa, Southeast Asia and India.[2][6] Roughly half a year after their first launches, the company’s games had acquired total more than 5 million downloads from over 180 countries around the world.[7][8] In 28th of November 2011 Star Arcade became the first company in the world to develop and launch Facebook-to-mobile multiplayer game Diamonds Capture.[9] Since then all their games have shared the same basic concept of real-time/synchronous cross-platform multiplayer gaming.[4][10] This means that users can play against each other regardless of their device, network or location.[11]

Despite being a relatively young business, Star Arcade has received several acknowledgements from the industry. In February 2012 the company was chosen as a runner-up at Mobile Application Week Helsinki.[12] Later that year in October they were nominated in “The Best Growth Stage Start-up Category” of the G Start-up awards at the Global Mobile Internet Conference, and at the same time they were also selected to the Mobile Entertainment Magazine Awards in the “Best Social Games Service Provider” category.[13][14] More recently, in March 2013 the company was also selected as a finalist in Red Herring's Top 100 Europe Award.[15]

Games developed

Star Arcade currently supports and distributes eight of all the games they have developed.[3] Currently they're working on the new Jelly Wars 2.0, which is set to be released sometime during 2014.
