Silver City is a city in Mills County, Iowa, United States. The population was 245 at the 2010 census. The Wabash Trace—a railroad converted to a bicycle trail—passes through here. At trailside, there is a small park with a gazebo, and across from it, a small, closed-up cafe.

History

Silver City had its start in the year 1879 by the building of the Wabash, St. Louis and Pacific Railway through that territory.[4]

Geography

(41.112051, -95.638057).[5] Silver Creek, the town's namesake and a tributary of the West Nishnabotna River, parallels the eastern city limits. The Wabash Trace Nature Trail, a former rail line, enters the town from the west and runs southeasterly through town, making a southerly turn before meeting Silver Creek.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.22 square miles (0.57 km2), all of it land.[1]

2010 census

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 245 people, 104 households, and 79 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,113.6 inhabitants per square mile (430.0/km2). There were 116 housing units at an average density of 527.3 per square mile (203.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.9% White, 0.8% Native American, and 3.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.

There were 104 households of which 26.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.4% were married couples living together, 4.8% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.8% had a male householder with no wife present, and 24.0% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.67.

The median age in the city was 45.3 years. 19.6% of residents were under the age of 18; 4.4% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 25.3% were from 25 to 44; 33.8% were from 45 to 64; and 16.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 52.7% male and 47.3% female.

2000 census

As of the census[7] of 2000, there were 259 people, 110 households, and 80 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,202.7 people per square mile (454.5/km²). There were 111 housing units at an average density of 515.4 per square mile (194.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.46% White, 0.39% African American, 0.77% from other races, and 0.39% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.77% of the population.

There were 110 households out of which 32.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.0% were married couples living together, 11.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.4% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.75.

Population spread: 25.9% under the age of 18, 3.5% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $36,250, and the median income for a family was $43,125. Males had a median income of $29,000 versus $31,071 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,864. About 3.6% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including none of those under the age of eighteen and 20.5% of those sixty five or over.
