Sarah Jeong (born 1988) is a militant far-left Korean-born American political activist and journalist specializing in IT law and other technology topics. Jeong is a senior writer for The Verge and in September 2018 joined the editorial board of The New York Times. She was previously a contributing editor for Vice's Motherboard section.

Subsequent to joining the NY Times Editorial board, it was discovered that Jeong had written a number of anti-White, anti-male and anti-Police Twitter postings[1][2] and several journalists accused The New York Times of hypocrisy.

Early life

Jeong was born in South Korea in 1988[3] and moved to New York City with her parents when she was three years old.[4] She attended the University of California, Berkeley and Harvard Law School, where she was editor of the Harvard Journal of Law & Gender.[3]

Career

Jeong writes on law, technology and internet culture.[5][6][7][8] She is a senior writer for The Verge and previously served as a contributing editor for Vice's Motherboard section, as well as writing articles for Forbes, the Guardian, and The New York Times.[9][10][11] In 2014, Jeong and Electronic Frontier Foundation activist Parker Higgins launched a periodic newsletter called "5 Useful Articles",[12] discussing intellectual property issues, current and historical.[13] The newsletter went on hiatus in 2015. In 2016, Jeong published a book, The Internet of Garbage, on online harassment[14][15] and responses to it by media and online platforms.[16] The book discusses active moderation and community management strategies to improve online interactions.[17] In 2017, Forbes named Jeong to its "30 Under 30" media list.[18]

In August 2018, Jeong was hired by The New York Times to join its editorial board as lead writer on technology, commencing in September.[19] The hiring sparked a strongly negative reaction in conservative media and social media, which highlighted derogatory tweets about white people that Jeong had posted mostly in 2013 and 2014.[20][21] Critics characterized her tweets as being racist; Jeong said that the posts were "counter-trolling" in reaction to harassment which she had experienced, and that she regretted adopting that tactic.[20] The Times said that it had reviewed her social media posts before hiring her, and that it did not condone the posts.[20][21]

During 2014 and 2015 Jeong made a large number of anti-White, anti-Male and anti-Police Twitter postings. They included statements like:

  • "Dumbass fucking white people marking up the internet with their opinions like dogs pissing on fire hydrants"
  • "Are white people genetically predisposed to burn faster in the sun, thus logically being only fit to live underground like grovelling goblins"
  • “Oh man. It’s sick how much joy I get from being cruel to old white men”
  • "When homeless people can beat cops senseless and suffer nary a repercussion, let's then talk about accountability going both ways"
  • "anyways my point is that we should kill all the men prior to removing the state from marriage as an institution"
