Sarah Sharp or Sage Sharp is a left-wing or far-left political activist, who does not identify by gender. Sharp described herself as a software engineer who has worked on the Linux kernel, including serving on the Linux Foundation's Technical Advisory Board for two years.[2] Sharp became interested in the kernel's development environment in 2006 as an undergraduate at Portland State University, and later through an Intel undergraduate research grant.[3] Sharp's claimed contributions to the kernel include writing and acting as a maintainer for its USB 3.0 driver.[4][5] Sharp said she stepped down from direct work on the kernel on 5 October 2015, claiming she had been discouraged by the abrasive communication style and "abusive commentary [on submitted patches]" of the maintainer community.[4][6][7]
Sharp is also a volunteer co-coordinator of the Outreachy project,[8] and led a team considering contributions to the Linux kernel for the project's June 2013 internships.[9]
Sharp won the first annual Red Hat "Women in Open Source Community Award" in 2015 for political "efforts in improving communications and inviting women into open source communities"[10] and the 2016 O'Reilly Open Source Award for accomplishments in the open source community.[8]
In 2017, Sharp began using the pronouns "they" and "them", and the first name Sage instead of Sarah.[11]
Early years
Sharp grew up in Rainier, Oregon,[12] and attended Portland State University as an undergraduate. While at Portland State University, Sharp worked on the Linux kernel for senior elective credits.[3]
