Major Akram Shaheed Memorial in Jhelum Location of Jhelum in Pakistan Jhelum or Jehlum (Urdu: جہلم) is a city in northern Punjab Province, Jhelum District, Pakistan. Jhelum lies on the right bank of the Jhelum River. The 16th-century Grand Trunk Road passes through the city. According to the 1998 census of Pakistan the population of Jhelum City was 145,847 while according to 2009 estimation of World Gazetteer its population is 172,073 and it is 35th largest city of Pakistan according to population. The name of the city is derived from the words Jal (pure water) and Ham (snow), as the river that flows through the river originates in the Himalayas. There are numbers of industry in and around Jhelum City. Major industries include a Tobacco factory, wood, marbel, glass and flour mills. Jhelum is known for providing a large number of soldiers to the British and later to the Pakistan armed forces due to which it is also known as city of soldiers or land of martyrs and warriors. Jhelum is near the site of the famous Battle of the Hydaspes between the armies of Alexander the Great and Raja Porus. This battle took place a few miles downstream from the city centre, along the river banks. The city was founded to commemorate the death of Alexander's horse, Bucephalus, and was originally called Bucephala. Nearby there is also the historic 16th century Rohtas Fort, another historic fort since Sikh era located at the backside of main Bus stand near Railway Phatak Jhelum City now being used as stores under Railway Authorities and also Tilla Jogian. Photo credit: Talha Today is June 12, 2024 September 19, 2009 Jhelum:Five hundred cadets of the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) including 22 female commissioned officers participated in a full-fledged military exercise held at Tilla Ranges of Jhelum District. Jet fighters, tanks and artillery were participating in the exercise. The exercise began in the mountainous terrain of Jhelum early in the morning with majority of the participating cadets, officers and jawans with fasting. No refreshment, water or food was provided during the tough training respecting the holy month of Ramazan. Name of the exercise was Fire Power Demonstration and Battle Inoculation summer Session 2009. Special feature of the exercise was engagement and destruction of targets by Artillery followed by destruction of fortified positions of the ‘enemy by jet fighters of Pakistan Air Force.
