Premise
For years, old wood-carver Mr. Chameleon (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of a fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, those stories are little more than tall tales until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley), a 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant green dragon named Elliott. From Pete's descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from her father's stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.

Production
Development
In March 2013, Disney announced a reboot of the 1977 film to be written by David Lowery and Toby Halbrooks from the Sundance hit Ain’t Them Bodies Saints. It will reinvent the core story of a "venerable Disney family film" and will not be a musical.[2] Principal photography commenced in January 2015 in New Zealand, with Lowery directing.[3] On October 2, Barrie M. Osborne was set to produce the film.[4] The film would be shot in live-action using Panavision Panaflex cameras. The animated dragon, Elliott will also be entirely animated in CGI instead of the usual hand-drawn animation.[5] He'll be created by Weta Digital.[6]
Casting
On September 19, 2014, Disney set Oakes Fegley and Oona Laurence to star as Pete and Natalie.[7] On October 16, Robert Redford was in early talks to play a local storyteller, involving dragons that no one believes.[5] On November 20, Bryce Dallas Howard was in talks for the female lead role to play a forest ranger who finds the boy and doesn't believe his stories about a dragon.[8] On January 7, 2015, Wes Bentley joined the cast of the film.[9] On January 9, Michael C. Hall was also added to the cast.[10] On January 29, Karl Urban replaced Hall to join the cast for his role.[11]
Filming
Rehearsals began early January 2015[12] while some news reported on January 26, 2015 about the beginning of the shooting which would last through April.[13][5] Live-action filming locations include Bay of Plenty, Taupo, Wellington and Canterbury, while CGI will be done at Stone Street Studios.[14] Later on February 10, 2015, a press release confirmed that the filming had commenced on the film in New Zealand.[15] Shooting was taking place in and around Wellington, which was intended to move later to Rotorua area, and then to Tapanui, where the old Blue Mountain Lumber mill was the mill in the film, and the main street became Millhaven for 2 weeks.[16]
Release
The film is set for an August 12, 2016 release.[17]
The film's teaser trailer premiered on ABC on February 21, 2016, during the television special The Wonderful World of Disney: Disneyland 60.
