Panchanan Mohanty

Panchanan Mohanty is a professor of applied linguistics in the Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies at the University of Hyderabad in India.

Early life and education

Born and raised in a village in Balasore district in the Indian state of Odisha, Mohanty studied both literature (at Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan, India), and linguistics at the University of Delhi, Delhi, India.

After a brief stint at the Orissa Educational Service and Berhampur University, he joined the Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies at the University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad (India) in 1990.

He has been a professor of Applied linguistics in the same center since 1998 where he teaches various subjects in linguistics and applied linguistics, and published more than 100 papers in journals like General Linguistics, Language Policy, Language Problems and Language Planning, Journal of Professional and Academic English, Mother Tongue, Indian Linguistics, International Journal of Dravidian Linguistics, Indian Journal of Linguistics, etc. and in different anthologies published from India and abroad on Language teaching, Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics, Ethnolinguistics, Translation studies, Computational linguistics, quantitative linguistics besides phonology and morphology that were the subjects of his doctoral thesis.

He has also written and edited 20 books in English and Oriya besides translating four books into Oriya. He has held positions in different linguistic associations and journals, like first a vice-president and then the president of the Dravidian Linguistics Association, chief editor of Indian Linguistics, journal of the Linguistic Society of India, deputy editor of International Journal of Dravidian Linguistics, journal of the Dravidian Linguistics Association, academic editor of The Asian ESP Journal, published from Korea and BVI, coopted member of the Foundation for Endangered Languages, U.K. and member of the editorial boards of different linguistics journals. He has also been a peer-reviewer for many publishing houses and professional journals published from various parts of the world.

Conferences

He has organized international and national conferences, seminars and workshops on the aspects of linguistics and translation studies at University of Hyderabad and participated in more than 140 conferences and seminars in India and abroad.

Other academia

He has also taught as a visiting professor at a number of universities in India and abroad. He was head of the Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies, Dean of Students' Welfare, and a coordinator as well as a member of many language technology projects funded by the Ministry of Information Technology, Govt. of India. He was coordinator of the P.G. Diploma in Translation Studies programme of the Centre for Distance Education, University of Hyderabad from 1996 to 2002. Now he coordinates the P.G. Diploma in Communicative English programme of this Centre. By 2009, he had supervised 15 Ph. D. and 24 M. Phil. students from India and abroad, and nine Indian and overseas students are working with him for their Ph. D. degree now.
