Dr. John D. Horn High School is a secondary school in Mesquite, Texas, United States. The school serves the southern portion of Mesquite and the Mesquite ISD portion of Seagoville.
John Horn High School, which serves grades 9 through 12, is a part of the Mesquite Independent School District. The school is under the UIL AAAAAA (or 6A) division. The Jaguar is the school mascot, and the school colors are red, black and white.

History
John Horn High School is the newest high school opened in the Mesquite Independent School District. It is named after the former superintendent Dr. John D. Horn.
The school opened in 2000 with only 9th and 10th grade classes. The enrollment in that first school year was approximately 550. In the 2006-2007 school year its enrollment was over 200 students. Ronnie Pardun was the first principal of the school succeeded by the current principal, Bruce Perkins.[2]
Clubs and organizations
The John Horn High School Marching Band has consistently received superior ratings at the many contests they attend. The Jaguar Marching Band has advanced to Area competition for the last two cycles (2008 and 2010) after never having been prior to 2008. In 2012, the Jaguar Band made UIL Area finals for the first time. The Jaguar Drum Line (JDL) has also been successful over the last few years. In the 2011 season, they took first place at the Lonestar Drumline Competition. In 2012, the Jaguar Band drumline finished 3rd at the PASIC Drumline Standstill division, taking best overall bass drum line. The Wind Symphony, the top ensemble, also has received consistent superior ratings over the school's history, with the exception of a few. The band department has had many successful students with some attending the Manhattan School of Music, Berklee College of Music, and the University of North Texas College of Music.
The John Horn High School Football team, made history during the 2008-2009 school year by making it to the playoffs for the first time. In the 2009-2010 school year they were victorious in their final district game and made it to the playoffs again. In 2010, for the third straight year, Horn made the playoffs. On November 12, 2010, they won their first playoff game in school history by defeating state power Copperas Cove 48-14. Horn would go on to beat Rowlett in a 44-22 at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX, and Leander 43-27 before losing in the state quarterfinals to Longview 28-14. The Johh Horn High School Fine Arts exhibits programs such as choirs, orchestra, and wind bands. The John Horn High School Theater operates two clubs: The Table Top Theatre Company and the 6292 Chapter of the International Thespian Society. JHHS dedicated the Lynda Horn Auditorium during the 2006-2007 school year. Both theatrical clubs received statewide recognition through the production of "Mmmbeth" at the Texas Thespian Convention in the fall of 2005.[citation needed] The clubs also volunteer their time serving as ushers for the Dallas Theatre Center.[citation needed] Also, the Theatre UIL play for 2006-2007: "Bits and Pieces" advanced to the Area competition, the first time in the JHHS Theatre history, and the first time in 10 years that a school from M.I.S.D. advanced from the District level.[citation needed]
The John Horn High School Varsity Cheerleaders are 9 time NCA State Gameday Champions, winning in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. Also, in 2007, the cheerleaders became ACA National Champions. In 2008, the Varsity cheer team competed at NCA Nationals receiving third place. In 2014 the cheer team won the NCA National Championship. The cheerleaders have won many awards while attending NCA summer camps, including Top Team, Champion Chant, Herkie Team Award, Spirit Stick, and the Spirit Megaphone Award. Also, at camp, they have had many cheerleaders individually receive the All American Award, which they must try out for and have had many seniors awarded applications to try out for NCA Staff.
The John Horn High School Academic Decathlon Team has won the Region XII competition five years in a row and advanced to the state level five years in a row: two years as a 4A school and 3 years as a 5A school. The team has finished within the top ten twice.[citation needed]
In the 2008-2009 school Year, the JHHS Invisible Children Schools for Schools Club Raised over $15,000 to help rebuild Pabbo Secondary School in War-Torn Northern Uganda. John Horn High School raised the most money in Texas and therefore won a trip for one student to go to Northern Uganda. In the summer of 2009, Amanda Shaffner, a senior of the graduating class of 2009, went to Northern Uganda and saw first hand the effects of the war on the region and how the money that was raised is being used to rebuild and improve Pabbo Secondary School. In the 2009-2010 school year, the club raised over $5,000 in the annual competition. A screening movie screening, hosted by the JHHS Schools for Schools club and Invisible children Roadies has been planned for the 2010-2011 school year. A Ugandan student will be on the tour and will tell their story and the story of their country face to face to John Horn High School students. JHHS plans to raise money and Participate in Schools for Schools in the 2010-2011 school year.
The Salsa Team, now known as the Jaguar Salseros focuses the world of Latin dance. They have performed all over the state of Texas and are scheduled to perform in Palm Springs, California; Tampa, Florida and Houston, Texas in summer 2008.[citation needed] They have qualified for the Texas Salsa Open in 2008.[citation needed]
In the 2007-2008 school year, both the Junior Varsity String Orchestra and Full Orchestra received Sweepstakes ratings in the UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest. The Varsity String Orchestra and Junior Varsity String Orchestra entered the 2008 SpringFest held at the Murchison Center at the University of North Texas and both received Division I ratings. In April 2009, the orchestra competed in the Breckenridge Alpine Classic Music Festival in Breckenridge, CO. Both orchestras received Division I ratings, and the Varsity Orchestra was named Runner-Up Overall Best Ensemble and received the Outstanding Soloist Award.
Standard dress
All students at Horn are required to dress according to a standardized dress code (similar to a school uniform) as of 2005 the code is at all Mesquite ISD middle and high schools.[3]

The following elementary schools feed into Horn: Pirrung, B.J. Smith, Gentry, Thompson, Achziger, and Rutherford.
Berry Middle School and Terry Middle School feed into Horn High School.
