History

The Pre-School - Grade 12 International School of Zug and Luzern (ISZL) was founded in 2008 following the merger of the International Schools of Zug and the International School of Luzern and The Riverside School.[5]

The International School of Zug (ISOZ) was founded 1961 in Zug, known then as The Zug Anglo-American School or the Zug American School. With just fourteen students, ISOZ provided an English speaking primary education for the expatriate families in the region. The campus is in the town of Baar, half way between Luzern and Zurich.

The Riverside School was founded in 1990 as a university preparatory high school. It has been offering the College Boards Advanced Placement (AP) programme since its inception. In 2007, Riverside was authorised to offer the Diploma Programme of the International Baccalaureate (IB). It is also a member of the European Council of International Schools. In 2003, Riverside moved to its current location on the lake of Zug. As of 2010, the campus has moved to Hünenberg.

The International School of Luzern (ISOL) was founded in 2006 as a sister school to the International School of Zug. ISOL is located in Kastanienbaum in the town of Horw, near the city of Luzern.

With the merger of these schools effective August 1, 2008, the new International School of Zug and Luzern (ISZL) will serve the needs of around 1,300 students from more than 50 different nationalities across three campuses.

Campuses and facilities

Zug Campus

Primary and Middle School Pre-School to Grade 8.

Home to over 800 students the Zug Campus is located in an idyllic rural setting on the outskirts of Baar in the Canton of Zug and hosts the Zug Primary School and Middle School. The Zug Primary School and Middle School offer classes from Early Years 1 up to Grade 8. The main building, the Wettinger House, was constructed in the late 17th century and is surrounded by modern classroom buildings. The Middle School is located in the Baarburg building, a new facility providing state-of-the-art science labs, the ISZL Gallery and the ISZL Theatre for school performances. The facilities also include two gymnasia, two computer centres, science laboratories, two libraries, music rooms, a cafeteria and dining hall. Additionally, the school has fully equipped outdoor playgrounds, two hardtop basketball courts, two indoor sports fields and an all-weather sports field.

Luzern Campus - will permanently close as of June 2016

Primary School Pre-School to Grade 5.

The Luzern Campus is located in Kastanienbaum on the outskirts of the town of Horw, ten minutes from the city of Luzern and hosts the Luzern Primrary division. The main school building, Villa Krämerstein, sits on the edge of Lake Luzern in extensive Parklands. With modern classrooms, a fully equipped playground, music room and library, the Luzern Campus provides an excellent international primary school education for over 50 students living in Luzern and the surrounding areas.

Riverside Campus

High School Grades 9 to 12.

The Riverside Campus is located in Hünenberg and hosts the ISZL High School, in an environmentally friendly purpose built building. The campus is attend by 340 High School students between the ages of 14 and 18. With extensive facilities such as four state-of-the-art science laboratories, three computer labs, six art and music facilities, dance/drama studio and a library it is perfect for any teenagers education. Additionally, the school has an all-weather hard court and a multipurpose sports field. In 2013 the build of a triple gymnasium, containing three gyms, a dance studio, techno gym, fitness center and climbing wall, was completed. The campus is conveniently located for access by public transport.

Outdoor Education Centre

Primary, Middle and High School Pre-School to Grade 12

In the summer of 2008, ISZL bought Chalet Bergehim a beautiful purpose-built wood chalet, located in the famous mountain village of Wengen, in the heart of the grand Berner Oberland. chalet Bergeim has numerous generously sized en-suite rooms, a lounge, a multi-purpose classroom, lecture theatre and dining area. With spectacular mountain ranges, 213 kilometers of prepared ski slopes, hiking trails, waterfalls, glaciers and the Lauterbrunnen gorge all in close proximity, Chalet Bergheim offers our students endless opportunities for class trips, winter sports, exploration and outdoor learning.

Language Program

English as an Additional Language (EAL) A large number of the students in the school do not have English as their mother tongue. Therefore, every EAL classroom contains a range of language capabilities in English. The EAL programme enables students to develop their language skills in a small group setting. The programme is inquiry-based and skills-based.

Mother Tongue Classes At present, there are 7 mother tongue language classes (Hebrew, Dutch, German, French, Spanish, Italian, and Swedish). These are private after-school lessons.

Sports

Physical Education is a compulsory part of the curriculum for students in the Primary Years Program. In addition, a variety of sports are offered at a competitive and non-competitive level and many lead to involvement at regional events. Boys' and girls' teams compete annually with other international schools at the Swiss Group of International Schools (SGIS) events in Switzerland.

Arts

Music is taught to all students, from Pre-School to Grade 8. In Grades 2 and 3, students have an additional recorder lesson. Students in Grades 4 through 8 learn an instrument of their choice. From Grade 8 onwards the four disciplines of visual art, dance, drama and music provide a medium through which students can explore, understand and develop their creative abilities. In addition to these concerts, each year the Middle School classes perform a musical show at a local theatre. The school has three choirs for various age groups. In the autumn of 2013, the Hünenberg campus opened a dedicated art facility to support ISZL's expanding arts program.
