List of Veronica Mars episodes

"Hi, Infidelity" is the sixth episode of the third season of the American mystery television series Veronica Mars, and the fiftieth episode overall. Written by John Enbom and directed by Michael Fields, the episode premiered on The CW on November 17, 2006.

The series depicts the adventures of Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) as she deals with life as a college student while moonlighting as a private detective. In this episode, when Veronica is accused of plagiarizing her criminology paper, she looks into who framed her and quickly finds out that her teacher is having an affair with Mindy O'Dell (Jaime Ray Newman). Meanwhile, Piz (Chris Lowell) invites Veronica to go bowling, and Wallace (Percy Daggs III) must choose between basketball and his studies.

Synopsis

Following the events of the previous episode, Claire (Krista Kalmus) is confronted for faking her rape after Veronica publishes a story on it. Wallace and a lawyer are taken in to Dean O’Dell’s (Ed Begley, Jr.) office, where he is caught for cheating. Veronica’s criminology paper is praised by the teacher, leading Veronica to praise him incessantly. Harmony Chase (Laura San Giacomo), a former client, calls Keith (Enrico Colantoni) and asks him on a date. Tim Foyle (James Jordan) tells Veronica that she plagiarized her paper, even though she did not. The professor (Patrick Fabian) gives her three days to prove that she is innocent. Veronica learns that a student named Jeff Ratner accused her. Veronica goes to a computer student and ascertains the email address of the person who faked her paper. Piz invites Veronica bowling, and she invites Parker (Julie Gonzalo) as well.

Veronica gets caught snooping in the Dean’s office, although she makes up a lie good enough to divert his attention. Wallace decides not to drop the class he cheated on, and Veronica proves that the paper was posted after she turned in her paper, although she still wants to find who framed her. Parker, Veronica, Piz, and Logan (Jason Dohring) bowl and have fun together. When Veronica and Logan get room service, Jeff Ratner appears, and Veronica accuses him of framing her, which he denies. Parker is romantically interested in Piz, and Parker tasks Veronica with talking to Piz about her. After talking to Mercer (Ryan Devlin), Parker informs Veronica that she remembers his cologne from the night of her rape. Veronica goes to Sheriff Lamb (Michael Muhney) with this news, and Wallace drops basketball to study for the class. Veronica runs into Keith at the hotel before learning that the room that belongs to “Rory Finch” is actually the criminology professor, who is having an affair with Mrs. O’Dell.

On their second date, Harmony suggests that they have sex, but Keith declines the proposal. On the way back, Keith’s car gets hit by another car, and the airbag catches him. This experience makes him go back to Harmony, and they sleep together. Veronica talks to Tim Foyle, who made her follow the trail of “Rory Finch” in order to discover the professor’s affair. Tim was the professor’s protégé, and he wanted her to avoid being caught by his “spell”. Logan runs up to Veronica and tells her that Mercer has been arrested for the rapes on campus, although he believes that Mercer is innocent. Logan begs Veronica to plead Mercer's case, as he was with Mercer the night of one of the rapes, although he will not tell Veronica what they were doing.

Production

"Hi, Infidelity" was written by John Enbom and directed by Michael Fields, marking Enbom's twelfth writing credit[1] and Fields's sixth directing credit for the series.[2] The episode features the second of three appearances by Laura San Giacomo as Harmony Chase. She and actor Enrico Colantoni enjoyed their storylines in "Charlie Don't Surf", so they lobbied for more storylines together. Thomas was open to the possibility, saying, "I wouldn't hesitate to go back to this, because I was really happy with how it played out."[3]

Reception

Ratings

In its original broadcast, "Hi, Infidelity" was watched by 2.75 million viewers, ranking 94th out of 97 in the weekly rankings.[4]

Reviews

Eric Goldman, of IGN, gave the episode a 7.8 out of 10, indicating that it was "good". However, he gave a very mixed review, writing that it did not fix the problems of previous episodes. "Things are still not quite up to par on Veronica Mars this season. The rape storyline is still not feeling nearly as weighty as it should, and a lot of the behavior of the characters surrounding the storyline, such as the Lilith House members, is not really understandable. At the same time, we are now getting hints of a much bigger mystery involved with the rapes, which is interesting."[5] Price Peterson, of TV.com, gave a positive review, writing "I liked this episode more than the last one. Everybody except Wallace had an interesting plotline…and I love whenever Veronica has to do self-serving casework. Raises the stakes. And while I'm not tired of Logan exactly, I appreciated that Piz's appeals skyrocketed just as Logan took another turn for the shady."[6] Television Without Pity gave the episode an "A", its highest rating for the season thus far.[7]

Alan Sepinwall praised the episode compared to the first few episodes of the season, writing "this episode did a much better job of balancing Veronica's baser instincts -- also including the worst of her green-eyed monster in that scene with the hotel desk clerk, who would have been totally justified in blowing off Veronica, pal of Logan or no -- with showing her friendlier, more generous side."[8] Rowan Kaiser, writing for The A.V. Club, gave a mixed review. The reviewer was very critical of what he called the " 'radical feminist fakes her own rape' " storyline, he also wrote that "Hi, Infidelity" was "one of the best [episodes] yet in terms of utilizing the college setting. The main plotlines help here, but it's mostly the little things that make it work. Piz, surprisingly, is the main strength here. […] For perhaps the first time in the third season, Hearst actually feels like something akin to my small liberal arts college education, and likewise for the first time, I didn't actively miss Neptune High."[9]
