The Channel Islands Electricity Grid (CIEG) is the joint company set up in 1998 between Guernsey Electricity and Jersey Electricity to operate and manage the submarine cables between Europe and the Channel Islands.

The CIEG is continuing to develop the undersea cable network and has announced a new project due for commissioning in 2015. 'Normandie 3' will install a further cable between Jersey and France, with additional connections between the islands and France currently being devised. These subsea cables will give both Guernsey and Jersey greater security and better affordability, as they will give the islands the opportunity to increase the amount of imported energy.

Long term agreements with Électricité de France (EdF) ensure the imported electricity is low carbon. [1]

Co-operating through the CIEG, means the islands can work together towards improving the reliability of the grid system.

Cable connections

Non operative

  • EDF1 - 1984-2012 - France to Jersey [2] The 27 kilometres (17 mi) faulty cable was lifted in 2016 for recycling.[3]

Operational

  • Normandie 2 - 2000 - 17 kilometres (11 mi) Surville, France to Jersey with a 90MW capacity.[4] Cable contains fibre optic cables.
  • Normandie 3 - 2014 - 32 kilometres (20 mi) Armanville, France to Jersey with a 100MW capacity [5]
  • GJ1 - 2000 - 37 kilometres (23 mi) Jersey to Guernsey with a 60MW capacity. [6] Cable contains 3 fibre optic cables of 24 fibres each.

Future

  • Normandie 1 - work started in 2016 - Surville, 27 kilometres (17 mi) France to Jersey with a 100MW capacity [7] [8] following same route as EDF1
  • GJ2 - expected 2016 - 38 kilometres (24 mi) Jersey to Petit Bot, Guernsey [9]
  • FAB 1 - France to England via Alderney 220 kilometres (140 mi) scheduled for 2018 with 1,400MW capacity. [10]
  • Possible - France to Guernsey [11]
  • Unlikely - Guernsey to Sark [12]
