André-Jules-Henri Vernet (18 April 1910 – 7 March 1999) was a French historian and specialist in medieval literature.

Biography

André Vernet was born at Yzeure in the Allier department of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. He attended the National School of Charters in 1933, graduating second in 1937 with a thesis on Bernardus Silvestris' De Mundi universitate.

He spent a few months in the Manuscript Department of the National Library, but was soon appointed General Secretary of the School of Charters by Clovis Brunel, with responsibility for the library. He held this post until 1955, while lecturing in paleography at the Sorbonne. At that time, he was elected to both the "Literary and narrative sources of French history" chair at the School of Charters, following in Robert Bossuat's footsteps, and the "Medieval Latin language and literature" chair at the Practical School of High Studies.

A specialist in the history of medieval texts, he has studied the library at Clairvaux Abbey and edited the volume on the History of French Libraries in the Middle Ages.

André Vernet died in the 14th arrondissement of Paris at 88 years of age.
