Background
Storm Flag Flying was a bay mare bred in Kentucky by her owner Ogden Mills Phipps.
Racing career
2002: two-year-old season
In 2002, Storm Flag Flying won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies(Grade I), a race won by her dam in 1995. She also won the Frizette Stakes (Grade I) and Matron Stakes (Grade I) in her championship two-year-old season. Her performances that year earned her the Eclipse Award for Outstanding 2-Year-Old Filly.
2003: three-year-old season
Off for six months, in her 3-year-old debut Storm Flag Flying finished a second to Cyber Secret in the Comely Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack. In the Acorn Stakes Storm Flag Flying basically refused to run, finishing next to last. The leg injury she sustained ended her 2003 racing season.
2004: four-year-old season
Storm Flag Flying rebounded in 2004, winning important races including a victory over Azeri in the Grade I Personal Ensign Handicap(the race named for her Hall of Fame champion grandmother) and the Shuvee Handicap. Bad luck in the 2004 Breeders' Cup Distaff saw Storm Flag Flying running dead last midway through the race. When she finally broke through the horses in front of her she made a strong run down the stretch but finished 2nd after she ran out of ground before she could catch the winner, Ashado.
Breeding record
She was retired to broodmare service at Claiborne Farm at the end of her racing career. She is the dam of 2 winners out of 5 starters. Her foals include:[1]
- a 2006 A.P. Indy colt named Colors Flying,
- a 2010 Smart Strike filly named Beat the Drums,
- a 2011 Unbridled's Song filly named Sea Trial,
- a 2012 Street Cry filly named Playtime,
- a 2013 Candy Ride colt named Revved Up,
- a 2015 Street Cry colt named Strident.
