Sandakan Heritage Trail (Malay: Jejak Warisan Sandakan) is a trail that connects every historical sites in Sandakan. Its mark on the ground is a square, white concrete tile with a red coloured footprint and a black lettering "Heritage Trail". A newer version takes up this theme in a different form with altered typography in gold letters.
History
Sandakan was almost completely destroyed by the end of the Second World War. The few remaining historical relics of the former North Borneo capital was combined into a historical trails in 2003 as Sandakan Heritage Trail (SHT).[1]
Destinations
The current eleven stations of the historical trails include:
- Jamek Mosque.
- MPS Square with the William Pryer Monument, the Chartered Company Monument, the Sandakan War Monument and the Sandakan Liberation Monument.
- 100-step staircase.
- Agnes Keith House.
- Historic staircase.
- Chinese Temple "Goddess of Mercy".
- Singapore Road.
- St. Michael's and All Angels Church.
- Sam Sing Kung Temple.
- Malaysia fountain.
- Tourist Information Centre and Sandakan Heritage Museum.
