Lisa Hamilton (also known by the alter ego La Mariposa) is a young African-American female character in the Dead or Alive video game series. She made her first series appearance in Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball and has appeared in all subsequent games in the series (with the exception of the Asian-only release Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 and its spin-off Dead or Alive Xtreme Venus Vacation). In the series, Lisa is a former scientist for DOATEC, the organization which runs the Dead or Alive tournaments, and is heavily associated with the characters involved with it. Lisa has held the most number of different occupations and roles of any character in Dead or Alive, being a scientist, a stockbroker, a holiday rep and a masked luchadora. Her various connections whether with characters or in business makes her the most affiliated character in the series. She is also the best friend of Tina Armstrong, one of the original characters in the series. The character has been well-received, mostly for her sex appeal. In 2006, Lisa was named IGN's "video game babe of the day".

Lisa has been voiced by Masasa Moyo and Wendee Lee in English and is voiced by Maaya Sakamoto in Japanese.

History

Time at DOATEC

Before participating in the Dead or Alive tournament, Lisa was a scientist working for DOATEC, specifically on the Epsilon project (it is also hinted that she may have some involvement on Project Alpha). For an unknown reason Lisa released Project Epsilon's test subject, the ninja Hayate. Whether she did this out of sheer contempt for the company's ever increasing shady experiments (she strongly dislikes Donovan) or because she grew emotionally attached to him are both likely explanations. She eventually left the company, supposedly becoming a stockbroker in her home country of America (DOAX2 states that she still held onto her job as a scientist for DOATEC prior to its destruction).

Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball

Lisa made her first appearance in Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball hired by Zack as his island's representative. She became the initial partner of every character in the first game as well as in the sequel. When Lisa is selected Tina is her initial partner in both games as well.

Dead or Alive 4

In Dead or Alive 4, Lisa is revealed to be the woman behind the mask of the mysterious luchadora La Mariposa. It is here where her ties into DOATEC begin to unravel, though she is ultimately more interested in wrestling her new rival (and best friend) Tina Armstrong than in the affairs of DOATEC. Before a showdown, Lisa admits to Helena Douglas that she has worked on project Epsilon. She also elaborates upon her resentment towards Victor Donovan and to get back at him she tricked the Ninja of the Mugen Tenshin Clan into attacking the DOATEC Tritower. She also fights Hayate as well as Helena.

Lisa also seems to know the details of Project ALPHA-152 and is shocked to find out the only way to stop it from awakening is to set the Tritower to self-destruct.

Dead or Alive 5

In Dead or Alive 5, it is revealed that she is an operative for Donovan's new organization, M.I.S.T., despite her hatred for Donovan as shown in DOA4. In the game's true ending, after she frees Hayate and the Mugen Tenshin ninja and Hayabusa destroy the lab, she is trapped under some debris and her scream can be heard in the following explosion. Whether or not she survived remained unknown until the release of Dead or Alive 6.

Dead or Alive 6

It is revealed that Lisa survived the explosion and continues to work as a scientist for M.I.S.T. in DOA6.

Personality

Drawing an analysis from Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball, it would seem Lisa is, at the very least, a very nice woman. She appears to be able to connect with most of the women on the island, as well as being able to draw up conversation with Ayane (which is a miraculous feat in itself); also Lisa seems to be a bit of a workaholic, evidenced by the fact that she is almost always seen doing some form of work. Dead or Alive 4 and Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 indicate that Lisa is one of, if not the most intelligent DOA girl, her previous job as a scientist is an obvious contributor to this fact and when various items are selected in Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 as Lisa her captions are presented in a very logical manner and quotes such as "Let's do this the smart way!". As La Mariposa she fits the role of the mysterious luchadora as she claims she was previously involved with the evil ambitions of DOATEC which leaves her history to be explained further.

Gameplay

Lisa can be considered a mixture between Tina Armstrong and Zack due to her powerful throws and quickly executed kicks. Her kicks are very effective, being especially adept at low- and mid-position tracking, and her counters nearly match those of Bayman in power percentage. Additionally, Lisa is unpredictable, making her difficult to counter and defend against. However, this unpredictability also makes Lisa a very difficult character to learn and master, and thus is very unsuited for beginning players.

Trivia

  • Her favorite color is Crimson Red.
  • Lisa's Lucha Libre moves are based on pro wrestler Nobuyoshi Nakamura.
  • Lisa used to represent her school in competitive volleyball tournaments.
  • Her standard tag-team partner is Tina Armstrong. Since they are both pro-wrestlers, they both perform powerful dual-throws.
  • Her luchadora name, La Mariposa, means "the butterfly" in Spanish. This would explain the fact that her costumes revolve around her mask as a butterfly (except her cat-like costume, which does have a butterfly mask, but only if the player presses a specific button when selecting the costume, it's default is unmasked).
  • Lisa and Tina have, in fact, been friends since their school days.
  • On 21 November 2006, Lisa was named IGN's "video game babe of the day".
