Summary
Microphotograph demostrates the distribution of connexin 43 (or GJA1) in the rat myocardium. This image was taken by V.Gurianova and L.Tumanovska in Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology using fluorescent-labeled antibodies. Connexin 43 is one of the major proteins forming gap junctions between the cells (in this case - between cardiomyocytes). The gap junctions serve for physical and functional coupling between the cells because of their ability to transport low-molecular-weight substances (such as ions and secondary messengers). Connexin 43 is widely expressed and was found in most cells forming syncytia. In the heart, it serves for synchronization of contraction. Furthermore, connexin 43 has much more functions necessary for oxidative stress response.
