Summary
<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gendarme_(historical)" class="extiw" title="en:Gendarme (historical)">French Gendarmes</a> in the <a href="//commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Italian_Wars" title="Italian Wars">Italian Wars</a>, early to mid sixteenth century. These men represent the return of the knight, now called Gendarme, to mounted combat. By the middle of the sixteenth century they would abandon the lance in favor of pistols, and during the seventeenth century the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_cavalry" class="extiw" title="en:Heavy cavalry">heavy cavalryman</a> would progressively shed his heavy armour as well.
