Summary

Guest country's landscape stone is the gable sandstone. Although well researched, little is known about the age of this Precambrian sandstone. It can be anywhere between 800 and 1500 million years old. It is red with variations in yellow and gray. The original storage with beautiful sediment structures is still there. Layering, drying cracks and grain size variations show that the stone was deposited in a dry and warm climate. It occurs in a stretch from Gävle to Lake Storsjön in Jämtland. Its equivalent elsewhere in the country is called Jotnian sandstone.

The Gävles sandstone has been mined in Gästrikland for more than two hundred years and used for millstones, grinding stones and as a set stone for blast furnaces. Around the turn of the century, it was extensively used as a building block in house foundations, stairs and portals. For example, it has been used in the Hallwyl Palace in Stockholm.
