Newer retrofit US domestic digital electricity meter <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="http://www.elster.com/">Elster</a> <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="http://www2.elstermetering.com/en/1914.shtml">REX</a> type R1S single-phase kWh <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smart_meter" class="extiw" title="w:Smart meter">smart</a> digital <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electricity_meter" class="extiw" title="w:Electricity meter">electricity meter</a>, upgraded from analog to facilitate <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_meter_reading" class="extiw" title="w:Automatic meter reading">automatic meter reading (AMR)</a>. It uses a 900MHz <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frequency-hopping_spread_spectrum" class="extiw" title="w:Frequency-hopping spread spectrum">Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS)</a><a rel="nofollow" class="external autonumber" href="http://www.elster-eis.com/en/LAN.html">[1]</a> <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/mesh_network" class="extiw" title="w:mesh network">mesh network</a> topology and 128-bit AES encryption to communicate back to an A3 Alpha meter collector, which then communicates over hardline to the energy provider, in a system branded as <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="http://www2.elstermetering.com/en/1257.shtml">"EnergyAxis" time-of-use metering</a>.
