Cabramatta West is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia 32 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Fairfield. It is part of the south-western region. Cabramatta is a separate suburb, to the east.

History

Cabramatta West was originally part of the suburb Cabramatta. In the dialect of the original inhabitants, the Cabrogal, a cabra was a tasty fresh water grub. A 100-acre (0.40 km2) block of land in the area, owned by the Bull family, was named Cabramatta Park and the name gradually spread to the surrounding area.[2]

Demographics

According to the 2011 census of Population, there were 6,767 residents in Cabramatta West. In Cabramatta West, 41.1% of people were born in Australia. The most common countries of birth were Vietnam 26.8%, Cambodia 6.9% and Italy 2.3%. 19.4% of people only spoke English at home. Other languages spoken at home included Vietnamese 38.2%, Cantonese 6.5%, Khmer 6.4%, Italian 3.2% and Serbian 3.1%. The most common responses for religion in Cabramatta West (State Suburbs) were Buddhism 41.5%, Catholic 23.8%, No Religion 8.4%, Eastern Orthodox 4.7% and Anglican 4.5%. [1]

Commercial area

The primary shopping centre is located on what is known locally as Cooks Hill.
