Bolarum is one of the major suburbs of Hyderabad, India. Geographically, a part of Bolarum is in Hyderabad district while another is in Ranga Reddy District. It comes under Secunderabad Cantonment Board.The encompassing area was mostly planned by the British during the time of the Nizams. In the past, more than half of the area used to be agricultural, but the farms have been transformed into residential and commercial areas. Bolarum has a railway station, and runs local (Suburban) and passenger trains.

Many important buildings of Indian historical relevance are located in Bolaram, one of which is an Officer's Mess located diagonally opposite to the church and Ayyappa Temple, opposite to St. Ann's Provincilate. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Defence Minister of India, negotiated the terms of surrender with the Nizam, when he came to Hyderabad as commander of the Indian army to annex Hyderabad state.

The Holy Trinity Church, Bolarum, a European-style church, had its construction funded by Queen Victoria in 1847. For this reason, Elizabeth II visited Bolarum to attended a service in this church on her Wedding Anniversary during her visit to India in the 1980s.[1]

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Bolarum had a population of 13,305. Males constitute 58% of the population and females 42%. Bolarum has an average literacy rate of 58%, lower than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 68% and female literacy of 43%. 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The majority of the population is Hindu. But one can find people of many religions living in harmony., including Jain, and also there are couple of mosques, and a Gurdwara. Most of the population are employees and work in Railways, Industries, defence, offices, etc.

Economy

Macha Bolarum market is an old vegetable market where the villagers get their produce/vegetable in train and sell it in this market, which lies next to the railway station. It has a big bazaar named Sadar Bazaar which has many textile, jewelry, general shops and Money lending shops.

Education

Bolarum is an educational hub of Hyderabad with many popular schools and colleges like the Valerian Grammar School, St. Ann's Girl School, Holy Angels High School, Model Mission High School, and a few postgraduate colleges like Navabharathi College of P.G. Studies.

The boys high school It was built in the year 1931.The boys high school headed by great mathematician Sri K. Sambamoorthy, who wrote Mathematics text books from 6 th class to 12th class and was in state cyllabus. Many more teachers Mr. Subba Rao, Head master, Mr. S. Subramaniam, Head master who was also Mathematician, Mr. V. Subramanian, Chemistry, Mr. Mahadevan, English, Mr. Venkatakrishnan, Tamil Pandit and many more have contributed for the best education. In those days it was giving more than corporate school education. Many students who passed out of this school turned out to be good doctors and engineers. Many sports personalities, to cite an example Mr. Thangaraj, football goal keeper who represented India, Mr. Ramswamy, football coach for railways, are from Bolarum Boys High School.

Mr. TRV Mani Iyer was another revered teacher from Bolarum. He taught Math and English in Valerian Grammar School.

Mr. Rajalingam Modiliar, who was a contractor during British rule, his wife, Lakshmi Rajalingam Mudaliar donated place for junior college, to be named as Lakshmi Rajalingam Mudaliar Govt. Junior college. The government could not make use of the place. Instead continued in the High school. Now renamed as Govt. Junior College.

Culture

Bolarum Ayyappa Temple

Bolarum is a popular place for Hindu temples like Ayyappa temple which is one of the oldest temple and Lord Shiva temple is famous for celebration of Navarathri, Ugadi & Shri Ram Navami which comes every year in the month of October and March or April and Ayappa temple in Telangana was built in the 1970s the first temple in Hyderabad. Muthyalamma temple is the oldest, and where every weekend is like a carnival with huge crowd. Mahankali Temple is known for Mela celebration every year in July. Shree Saraswati Devi Devalayam in Bolarum is the oldest devalayam which has been here since 75 years, this temple initially was a bhajan mandir and is famous for basant panchami and dusherra which are celebrated with huge devotees. Hanuman Temple, Sai baba temple, Lord Shri Ram, Ganesh Ji, Bhulakshmamma Temple are other temples. There is a Venugopal Swamy temple which celebrates the Margazhi month from mid Dec to mid Jan till Sankranti, every year. Tirupavai is recited with great devotion during this period.

Bolarum is home to a very big Church built in European style (Holy Trinity Church), built in 1847 by a member of British Royal family (Queen Victoria), which is why Queen Elizabeth [1] visited this church and attended a service on her Wedding Anniversary when she visited to India in the 1980s.

Important landmarks

Some important landmarks are:

  • Rashtrapati Nilayam - It also houses the Rastrapati Nilayam, the equivalent of Rashtrapati Bhavan in new Delhi. This serves as the house/office of the president during his/her yearly sojourn to south of India. During the President's Southern sojourn, this building literally converts into the president's office.
  • Chateau (Winston Churchill's Home) - The Chateau and also The Retreat, close to the Valerian Grammar School, one of the old and famous schools in the area, housed Winston Churchill during his early days as a British army Captain during the British Raj.
  • Valerian Grammar School (Estd. 1961)- Is the oldest convent school in the locality with many distinguished Alumni.
  • Sadhana Mandhir School is also one of the oldest landmarks in Bolarum. It was a soap factory before. During Freedom struggle Acharya Vinoba Bhave stayed in Sadhana Mandhir for a few days on his Journey of the famous BhooDhaan Yagna.
  • Kutiya Temple, near Risala Bazar bus stop is a more-than-100-year-old temple. The deity is Lord Hanuman which is visited by most devotees on Saturday or Tuesday. Lord Sai Baba, a very beautiful "Vigraha" is the most visited on Thursday when free "Prasadam"( lunch) is served to all devotees. The temple has recently installed a " Stambh" and consecrated a " Shiva Linga". The Kutiya Mandir is developing to be one of the most beautiful and vibrant temples in Secunderabad.
  • LRMG Jr College(Earlier Zilla Parishad High School) - One of the oldest colleges in the city of Hyderabad. It was constructed in the year 1926. It has a huge and magnificent building with a big auditorium.
  • RSI Club: The Rajender Singhji Institute is again a club for defence personnel only. It also has a huge Olympic sized swimming pool very close to it.
  • The Autism Friendly School and Care4Autism Center is the newest addition to Bolarum and is housed in a 10,000 sft building in Triveni Colony, behind Cantonment Hospital. This will be the most modern and the largest such facility in South India with 50 children living with Autism, a neurological disorder. It will also have digital classrooms and a Vocational Center under Project Maaya (Managing Autism among Young Adults ).
  • Bolarum Library, close to Lakadwala cross roads is also a very old landmark of Bolarum. After multiple attempts, this Library was finally inaugurated by Lieut.-Colonel Kirkwood on 23 July 1892.[3]
  • St. Ann's Provincilate, Ayyapa Temple, St. Ann's Girls school all on the same road stretch.
  • Holy Angels High School run by Sisters of St. Anne, Madras and St. Anne's Hostel-Jeevanalaya near Bolarum Railway station.

Neighbourhoods

Bolarum's major localities include: Doveton Bazar, Risala Bazar, Kalasiguda, Chintal Bazar, Pioneer Bazar, Burton Guda and Macha Bolarum (which is separated from the others mentioned by a railway track that has two broad gauge lines). A major gated community under the name ARK homes has recently come up near Bolarum Railway Station.

Transport

Bolarum has a local train station which runs local trains (Diesel Multiple Units) connecting it to Secunderabad, Kacheguda, Falaknuma and Hyderabad (Nampally) Railway stations . Hyderabad's light rail transportation system Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) is yet to be introduced in Bolarum. After the Union Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure approved the upgradation of railway infrastructure for introduction of Phase II of Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) in the twin cities, the work on the Secunderabad - Bolarum stretch was supposed to start in March–April 2012 but it hasn't been taken up by the South Central Railway yet.

The state-owned TSRTC runs the city bus service, connecting to all the major parts of the city. It is 10 km from Secunderabad Central Railway Station and 12 km from Begumpet Airport & 41 km from New International Airport at Shamshabad. It is the most preferred mode of transport here as the local trains are very few, very slow and are always late and they take double the time to reach Secunderabad than the buses.
